Sisi Tawadros

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi met [Ar] with Pope Tawadros II, head of the Coptic Church, amid a spike of religious violence against Copts in Egypt. According to a Coptic Church spokesperson, the meeting focused on the issues of national unity, the effectiveness of state institutions, and the future of the state. Al-Sisi stressed that all Egyptians are equal, and that the recent attacks are “individual incidents.”

Tawadros II did not address recent incidents of religious violence, or make any demands on behalf of the church. However, he expressed gratitude toward the president for collaborating with the church on a new law regarding church construction.
