Gottas Youssef, a member of the defense team representing the defendants in the case concerning the demolition of the wall of Pope Kyrillos Church in the “Zohour 15 May” area, announced that 13 defendants have been released on bail set at 2,000 Egyptian pounds each. The court has scheduled March 12 for the substantive hearing of the case.
The defendants were arrested on February 5 following a peaceful protest that erupted after authorities demolished the wall surrounding land allocated for the construction of a church.
As of this writing, no information has been provided regarding the circumstances of the demolition itself, the manner in which it was carried out, or whether a protective fence will be erected on the portion of land designated for the church.
The defense described the release decision as a positive step toward resolving the case. The legal team stated that it intends to demonstrate the defendants’ innocence during the upcoming hearings, citing evidence that they were not involved in any criminal wrongdoing.
In a related development, the Diocese of Helwan, Ma’sara, and 15 May issued an official statement “expressing gratitude” and relief over the release of the church members who had been detained in connection with the incident. The Diocese concluded its statement by expressing hope that the matter will be resolved peacefully and that calm, stability, and goodwill will prevail among all residents of the area.
