Circulating reports indicate that the owner of a clothing store has been arrested following the spread of social-media posts concerning his design and sale of clothing bearing religious phrases and slogans of a provocative nature, which have generated widespread controversy in recent days.

According to the information being circulated, a security force arrested the store owner at his home in the Qanater al-Khayriyah area. It has not been possible, however, to independently verify the details of the arrest or the legal grounds on which it was based.

The accused had posted on his social-media accounts photographs of clothing bearing religious and martial slogans, as well as references to matters such as the imposition of the jizya [the poll tax historically imposed on non-Muslims under Islamic rule]. These generated widespread reactions among social-media users concerning their effect on social peace, particularly because of what they saw as incitement to hatred against others, in a manner resembling the Muslim Brotherhood’s use of religious sentiment to inflame passions.

A number of social-media users also circulated photographs of the clothing being offered for sale, accompanied by criticism and accusations that the store owner was promoting extremist or jihadist ideas.

Reports also circulated that several lawyers had filed complaints with the competent authorities against the store owner, requesting that the content and designs he was offering be examined and that their compliance with applicable laws be investigated.

This information remains based on what has been circulated, pending an official statement from the competent authorities clarifying the circumstances of the incident and the legal measures taken in connection with it.

Examples of the slogans printed on the clothing

The photographs reproduced in the document provide important context because the designs combine the words with images of armed or medieval Islamic warriors.

One prominent design carries the Qur’anic phrase:

“فَإِمَّا أَنْ تُسْلِمُوا وَإِمَّا الْجِزْيَة وإمّا الحَرب”
“Either you embrace Islam, or [pay] the jizya, or [face] War”

The design depicts an armed, masked medieval warrior. A smaller line beneath it appears to contain additional religious/historical wording, but it is not sufficiently legible in the supplied images for me to translate it reliably.

Another design reads:

“التقاعس”
“Inaction” / “Failure to act”

with smaller text underneath that is not clearly legible in the photograph.

Another shirt appears to carry:

“خالد بن الوليد”
“Khalid ibn al-Walid”

alongside an armed-warrior illustration and further text referring to the Islamic warrior Khalid ibn al-Walid. Some of the Arabic writing (partially obscured by the artwork) say:

“Either convert to Islam, pay the jizya, or face war.”

“Khalid ibn al-Walid — the Unsheathed Sword — the commander who was never defeated.”
“Either embrace Islam or pay the jizya …” [remainder unclear]

The photographs also show clothing carrying explicitly martial imagery—swords, armed warriors and battle-associated figures—alongside religious quotations and references.

Yet other shirts say:

  • وإنّا برجال يحبون الموت كما تحبون الحياة
“We have men who love death as you love life.”
“Al-Qa‘qa‘ — one man worth a thousand horsemen.”
“We do not surrender. We triumph or die.”
    “I am Muslim.”
