Between September 22 and 24, 2025, Islamic State Mozambique Province (ISMP) released eight statements on Telegram[1] claiming responsibility for the killing dozens of Christians in attacks in Northern Mozambique. Following are the statements in chronological order.
September 22
On September 22, 2025, ISMP issued a statement, in which it claimed responsibility for ambushing Christians along a road in northern Mozambique several weeks earlier, on September 3. According to the statement, ISMP fighters captured and beheaded one Christian during the ambush, which took place along the “Niassa-Palma road.”
In another statement, ISMP reported that its fighters attacked the village of Monabo near Palma, in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado Province on September 9. During the attack, ISMP fighters reportedly set fire to a dozen homes and a church in the village.
ISMP also claimed that its fighters attacked another village near Palma on September 22, reportedly killing a Christian and setting fire to two homes in the village.
September 23
According to a statement issued on September 23, ISMP fighters clashed with Mozambican and Rwandan soldiers in the Macomia district of Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province on September 22. The statement reported that two soldiers were killed and another two wounded in the clashes. Additionally, ISMP fighters looted their weapons.
On September 23, ISMP fighters captured and beheaded a Christian in the village of Nahufi in the Chiure district of Cabo Delgado.
ISMP also claimed responsibility for conducting a “new attack” on Mozambique’s coastal city of Mocimboa Da Praia on September 22. According to a September 23 statement, ISMP fighters attacked one of the city’s neighborhoods, killing at least four Christians and wounding another five.
September 24
On September 24, ISMP reported that its fighters raided a village near Palma on September 23, during which it set fire to the home of a Christian.
Separately, ISMP fighters raided another village in the Montepuez area of Cabo Delgado on September 23. According to a statement, during the attack ISMP fighters set fire to four Christian homes.
