In light of several alarming attacks against Coptic and Assyrian Christians during the first few months of the year, Senator Blunt agreed to lead a bipartisan, bicameral letter (enclosed) to President Obama raising the issue of the vacant position of Special Envoy to Promote Religious Freedom for Religious Minorities in the Near East and South Central Asia.

To support these legislators’ efforts, a coalition letter, cosigned by a number of NGOs (including Coptic Solidarity) and personalities, was also organized (enclosed).

Both letters demonstrate the ongoing widespread interest in the appointment of this position.

President Obama had signed in August 2014 the Near East and Central South Asia Religious Freedom Act into law. The position of Special Envoy, stipulated by that Act, has never been filled.
