Karam Ghabriel, Hegazy’s lawyer, expressed his dismay at the verdict.

“It is the same case and the charges are an integral part,” Ghabriel told MCN. “The prosecution has brought several charges against Hegazy, including shooting videos of demonstrations without a permit, dissemination of false news and disturbing public security and peace. All these charges are over a single issue.”

“If the judge is convinced of the innocence of the defendant and dropped the charges against him, why does he not acquit the defendant of all the charges against him?” Ghabriel wondered.

Ghabriel said he decided to re-appeal against the imprisonment ruling, since two of the charges were already dropped.

He stressed the insistence of the court to punish Hegazy in any way. The lawyer was unable to get a copy of the judgment to know what was first charge for which the court sentenced the defendant.

The Misdemeanor Court in Minya had previously sentenced Hegazy to 5 years in prison for “spreading false news, recording videos of demonstrations and disturbing public security and peace.”
