Recent remarks made by Egypt’s leading Islamists continue to expose their blatant hypocrisy and exploitation of democracy as a tool to be discarded once it serves Islamist purposes
Discussing the First Article of the original Egyptian Constitution—which states that “The Arab Republic of Egypt is a democratic state based on citizenship”—Sheikh Wagdi Ghoneim recently condemned democracy in a tweet on his twitter account: “How could Egypt be an ‘Islamic State’ with a democratic system? Why aren’t the Islamists objecting to this outright blasphemy?” He added: “The Second Article talks about principles—what kind of Islam is this? How are you standing up for Sharia? We won’t let this constitution get passed.”
As for the mass protests again President Morsi’s move to impose a Sharia-heavy constitution on Egypt, in very un-democratic fashion, the President’s own son, Ahmed Morsi, accused the demonstrators in Tahrir Square of belonging to the former regime, as if to say anyone who goes against his father is at fault, forgetting that protests and demonstrations are integral aspects of democracies. He said through his account on Facebook: “All the people in Tahrir Square are remnants of the old regime. The real rebels should head to the presidential palace. He also advised ElBaradei to stay away from politics and said that “my father will eliminate them soon,” in reference to the demonstrators in Tahrir Square.
