An Egyptian Misdemeanor Appeals Court has upheld a five-year prison sentence with hard labor against Augustinos Samaan, according to a statement released today by his legal counsel, Saeed Fayez.

The ruling confirms the verdict of the lower court, and also imposed the payment of all associated court costs. Following the decision, the defense office issued a formal response expressing respect for the judiciary while simultaneously condemning the procedural environment in which the trial took place.

Lead attorney Saeed Fayez highlighted significant “procedural issues” that have plagued the case since its beginning. The defense team alleges they were denied timely access to essential case files, a move they argue constitutes a violation of the constitutional right to a fair and effective defense.

Despite the appellate court’s decision, the defense team has signaled that they do not view this as the end of the legal process. “Upholding the ruling does not prevent us from using all legitimate legal methods guaranteed by law,” the statement read, indicating plans to pursue further appeals and introduce core defense arguments that were previously restricted.

The defense reaffirmed its commitment to international fair trial standards and constitutional protections, vowing to continue its advocacy for Boutros through every available legal channel.
