The World Youth Forum in Sharm El-Sheikh came to a close on Thursday, but not before President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and other Egyptian leaders had made a number of intriguing statements.

  • Following a Model UN Human Rights Council simulation in which participants criticized Egypt’s human rights record, al-Sisi claimed, “I felt the speech is very harsh, but the reality in Egypt is not [like that] at all, and what was said is a form of abuse, whether intentional or not.”
  • National Council for Human Rights head Moushira Khattab, meanwhile, said that negative statements about Egypt’s human rights record might have some value but should be scrutinized because they could include “fallacies, blackmail, and pressure.” She defended the country’s “original approach to dealing with Egyptian human rights” and said that “talking about enforced or precautionary disappearance is not the true picture of what Egypt is experiencing.”
  • Khattab also went on the attack, criticizing the United States for racial injustice and the Afghanistan withdrawal. Al-Sisi similarly lambasted Europe for its immigration policies and commented that “non-interference in the internal affairs of countries is a human right.”
  • Turning to democracy issues in Egypt, al-Sisi claimed to foreign journalists that he would be willing to hold elections every year, “but on one condition: You bear the financial cost of the electoral process.”
  • Al-Sisi added that Egypt needs $20 to $30 billion annually to cover its needs but cannot save that money if the country has demonstrations. Yet he promised: “Write down $50 billion each year, and I will ask the Egyptians to stand in the street.”
