Dear St. Mark’s Family,
With humble acceptance of God’s will, the Church wishes to announce the passing of Atef Rafla Jacoub on January 26th, 2021. He will be remembered by all for his compassionate heart, generous spirit and selfless character. We lost a special father, brother, and most notably, a true servant this week. Many of us experienced the service of Uncle Atef visibly within the church, but the service he performed in secret extended far beyond what anyone knew. We may have seen him openly fight for Christian injustice in Egypt, but many were not aware of his sleepless nights worrying about the newcomer families who were struggling to survive in America. At one point, the basement in his home could have been mistaken for a retail warehouse, due to all the supplies he gathered to support struggling families. He took on each problem as if it were his own, and the effects of his services will resonate and be felt for years to come.
Atef Jacoub is survived by his devoted wife Georgette. He was the proud father of Marianne and her husband Father Anthony, Irene and her husband Sameh, and John. He adored his grandchildren, Michael, Lizzie, Anna, Maya and James. He was deeply devoted to his siblings, the late Gamal and Soad, Hosni and Ramonda, Magdy and Mona, Mervet and Ibrahim, Girgis and Afaf, Emad and Inas and Magda and Wassim and in-laws, George and Hawaida, Magdy and Magda, Kamal and Hala, Lala and Talaat and Maher and Elise. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, whom he loved deeply.
There will be a funeral service in the sanctuary of St. Mark Coptic Orthodox Church of Washington, DC on Tuesday, February 2nd, at 11AM. For the safety of all and due to COVID-19 limitations, the funeral will only be open to a restricted number of family and friends, which the family will privately send invites for. As Atef was deeply loved, everyone is welcome to join the burial at Fairfax Memorial Park at 12:45PM (please meet at the entrance of the cemetery at 12:40PM). People are also welcome to participate by joining the funeral live stream here.

الأحباء أبناء كنيسة مارمرقس،
بقلوب خاضعة يملأها الإيمان تنعي الكنيسة الخادم الأمين عاطف رفله يعقوب و الذي رقد علي رجاء القيامة يوم ٢٦ يناير ٢٠٢١. فلقد فقدت الكنيسة قلباً حانياً، و روحاً سخية و شخصاً معطاء، حيث كان أخاً و أباً و بالأكثر خادماً حقيقياً. لمس كثير منا خدمته داخل الكنيسة، و لكن قليل منا يعرف عن تفانيه في خدمات أبعد من ذلك. ربما يعلم الكثيرون عن دفاعه المستمر عن حقوق الأقباط المضطهدين في مصر، لكن لا يعلم كثيرون عن قضائه ليالٍ طويلة في خدمة المهاجرين الجُدد، لدرجة أن بدروم منزله صار أشبه بمخازن المتاجر من كثرة السلع التي تملأ المكان و التي اشتراها لمساعدة الأُسر المحتاجة، فكم إهتم بضيقات الآخرين و كأنها تخصه هو شخصياً.
عاش في سلام مع زوجته چورچيت، وأبناءه چون، و ماريان زوجة أبونا القس أنتوني، و أيرين زوجة السيد سامح. وهو جد كلٍ من مايكل، و ليزي، و آنّا، و مايا، و چيمس.
و شقيق كلٍ من المرحوم جمال زوج السيدة سعاد، و السادة حسني زوج السيدة راموندا، و مجدي زوج السيدة مني، و جرجس زوج السيدة عفاف، و عماد زوج السيدة إيناس، و السيدات ميرڤت حرم السيد إبراهيم، و ماجدة حرم السيد وسيم. و نسيب كلٍ من السادة چورچ زوج السيدة هويدا، و مجدي زوج السيدة ماجدة وكمال زوج السيدة هاله، و ماهر زوج السيدة إليس، و السيدة لالا حرم السيد طلعت، و أبنائهم و بناتهم.
تقام صلاة الجناز علي روحه الطاهرة في تمام الساعة الحادية عشر (١١) من صباح يوم ٢ فبراير ٢٠٢١ بكنيسة مارمرقس واشنطن (الكنيسة الرئيسية). و نظراً لظروف وباء ڤيروس كورونا فسيقتصر حضور صلاة الجناز علي عدد محدود من الأهل و الأقارب، بدعوات شخصية تتولي الأسرة إرسالها مباشرةً.
الدعوة عامة لكل من يرغب في حضور مراسم الدفن بمقابر حديقة فيرفاكس التذكارية في تمام الساعة الواحدة إلا رُبع (١٢:٤٥) ظهراً. برجاء الحضور أمام البوابة بنحو خمسة (٥) دقائق مبكراً قبل الدفن. كذلك يمكن متابعة صلاة الجناز عبر خدمة البث المباشر هنا
و تتقدم الكنيسة شعباً و خُداماً بخالص العزاء لأسرة المنتقل طالبين نياحاً لروحه الطاهرة في فردوس النعيم.
