Gawish’s official Facebook page Al-Warqa (The Paper) said that he was arrested from his office — Egypt News Network (ENN) — for allegedly publishing an anti-regime cartoon.

His Facebook page announced that it had suspended its activities due to his arrest.

News reports, quoting unnamed sources in the Ministry of Interior, said that Gawish was arrested for running a Facebook Page and news website without permission.

In addition, the sources also said that Gawish published false online statements without the Ministry of Telecommunication’s permission and for possessing fake copies of software.

Ahram Online has not independently confirmed the nature of the charges that Gawish is currently facing.

There are no legal restrictions in Egypt on launching and moderating a Facebook page. However, a significant number of moderators have been arrested in recent months on various charges, mostly for attempting to instigate protests and violence.

Gawish earned fame on social media for his Facebook page Al-Warqa with its doodle cartoons that were mostly based on social issues in Egypt. His second comic book Al-Warqa Part Two was recently released.

An accountant working alongside Gawish at ENN news website was also arrested before being released shortly.
