Like many others, those abducted, who are all from the province of Minya (Upper Egypt), went to Libya seeking work to support their families back in Egypt.

Fr. Stephanous Shehata, of the Samalout Diocese, told MCN that according to information provided by other Egyptians in Libya, the kidnapped Copts were on a microbus, driven by a Libyan, on their way back to Egypt. The driver stopped while still inside Libyan territory and eight armed members of Ansar al-Sharia (“Defenders of Sharia”) erupted and took the Copts in a car to an unknown location.

Magdi Sobhi, an Egyptian Coptic doctor, and his wife were killed last week in the Libyan city of Sirte by unknown gunmen. The attackers then took the victims’ daughter to an unknown location, according to a local Libyan official. The daughter’s body was found two days later in the desert of Libya.
