A Copt, Ra’fat Nader, was attacked by two men because he refused to force his wife and daughter to wear the higab during the Iftar hour of Ramadan. He sustained injuries in his hand and head.

The victim’s wife said that Mr Nader, a hairdresser, was sitting in front of his hair salon which is located on the ground floor of the building they reside in, when he was accosted by the assailants, a father and son. They demanded of him that he make his daughter, Rika, wear higab, and expressed objections concerning his work as a women’s hair-dresser. She said that, despite being their neighbours in the same building, the father and son were fundamentalists who repeatedly harassed her and her daughter.

When Mr Nader rejected the demands they left, only to return armed with knives with which they stabbed him. One of the salon employees cried for help, which drew the attention of passersby who rushed to the rescue.

Mr Nader was moved to hospital where he underwent a three-hour surgery to treat severed arteries and fractures in his hand. He also sustained a head injury, and as yet remains under medical care.

Helwan Prosecution is investigating the assault. The father and son remain in police custody pending investigation.

The victim’s daughter, Rika, posted a message thanking the Interior Ministry for the arrest of the perpetrators; stating that her family seeks justice.
