Statement from the Ministry of Interior

With regard to what has been circulated on several social media accounts concerning a dispute between two families in a village in the Beni Mazar district of Minya Governorate, and attempts by some to portray it as a sectarian incident:

A security source confirmed that the mentioned altercation erupted due to a disagreement between two families following a relationship between a young woman and a member of the other family. Some parties attempted to give the incident a sectarian dimension because the two sides belong to different religions.

Legal procedures were taken at the time, and upon being referred to the Public Prosecution, it ordered the detention of the young man pending investigation.

Subsequently, the two families reconciled during a customary reconciliation session in accordance with the traditions and customs of the village. This, the Ministry notes, does not conflict with the legal measures taken.

The Ministry of Interior warns against attempts by some to exploit the incident to undermine the spirit of brotherhood and national unity between the components of the nation. Legal action will be taken firmly against anyone who does so.
